Shop canvas by where it goes. Living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining, office, kids and nursery — each room has its own size rules, palette tendencies, and subject fit. Use this page to land on a room first, then refine by color, theme, or size from there.
How to choose canvas for each room
Living room — the focal piece
This is the wall most guests see, so size matters more than anywhere else. Above the sofa, canvas width should be 60-75% of the sofa width. Most ordered living-room sizes are 40×60 and 48×72 inches. For sectional sofas (96 inches+), step up to a 3-panel split.
Bedroom — calmer subject, anchored above the headboard
The canvas hangs at the head of the bed. Width should match the headboard, not the mattress. Twin (38 in headboard) → 24×36 canvas. Queen (60 in) → 36×48 or 40×60. King (76 in) → 48×72. Hang the bottom 4-8 inches above the headboard.
Dining room — wide rather than tall
Above the dining table, canvas should be roughly two-thirds the table length. 72-inch table → 48-inch wide canvas. 96-inch table → 60-72 inch wide. Hang slightly lower so it reads from a seated position.
Kitchen — durable subjects in steam-friendly zones
Keep canvas at least 5 feet from the stovetop and avoid hanging directly above the sink. Botanical and floral canvas works for traditional kitchens; modern abstract or coastal works for contemporary kitchens.
Office and home gym
Office: pick canvas you can look at for 8 hours. Quiet landscapes, abstract organic, monochrome botanical. Home gym: high-energy is fine — abstract bold colors, mountain landscapes, animal portraits.
Kids and nursery
Nursery (0-3 years): soft pastels, gentle animals, wildflower meadows. Kids (3-12): woodland animals, adventure scenes, sports, educational. Pick subjects that age well so you don't redecorate every two years.

Frequently asked questions about canvas by room
What canvas size for above a sofa?
60-75% of the sofa width. For an 84-inch sofa, choose 50-63 inches wide — 40×60 or 48×72 works well. Hang 6-12 inches above the back of the sofa.
What size canvas above a queen bed?
36×48 or 40×60 — match the headboard width (60 inches), not the mattress. Hang the bottom 4-8 inches above the headboard.
Can I hang canvas in a bathroom?
Yes if ventilated. Steam from a daily shower in a vented bathroom is fine. Don't hang in a non-ventilated bathroom, directly above the bathtub, or in a shower stall.
Can canvas go in a kitchen above the stove?
No, not directly above. Oil splatter and rising heat damage the surface coating. Keep canvas at least 5 feet from the stovetop and use a vent hood.
What canvas works in a home office?
Subjects you can look at all day — quiet landscapes, abstract organic, monochrome botanical, sage or sky-blue palette. Avoid high-saturation reds and oranges and busy cityscapes.
Does canvas hold up in humid rooms?
Yes if humidity stays 40-55%. Bathrooms with steam and basements with dampness are riskier. If the room is reliably ventilated and heated, canvas works.
